Our History

Our reputation as one of Australia’s leading specialist law firms is built on decades of experience and service.

Speed and Stracey was founded in 1976 by Robin Speed and Bruce Stracey, two highly respected Sydney lawyers with extensive experience in taxation and commercial law. Over the years Speed and Stracey has become recognised as one of Australia’s leading specialist law firms, representing some of the country’s most successful individuals and corporations.

The fundamental objective of the firm was, and remains, to provide efficient and strategic legal solutions using dedicated, hands on teams of accomplished lawyers. The firm and our co-founder, Robin Speed, have played a critical role in the establishment of the Rule of Law Institute of Australia, and we are heavily involved in work within the local and wider communities.

Today, both Robin and Bruce continue to practise at the firm alongside skilled directors and their teams.
All of the matters we undertake are addressed with the same commitment and expertise we have provided since our inception.

Vision & Values

At Speed and Stracey our successful results are driven by our vision and values.

Our team is dedicated to strategically and efficiently solving the complex and sensitive legal problems of
prominent and successful Australians and international groups.

Experience

Experience

We strive to be leaders in our practice areas. To achieve this, we encourage our lawyers to complete Masters degrees and join outside law organisations that monitor and review developments in their fields. Our directors appoint the most appropriate team for each engagement, tailored to the required expertise. Teams may also engage the services of outside experts to advise on particular issues, ranging from forensic financial and computer experts to psychologists for both litigious and non-litigious matters.

Efficiency - Speed and Stracey

Efficiency

At Speed and Stracey we typically operate in teams of two, being a director and associate or senior associate, in order to provide you with quality, cost effective services. We have developed our own project management software to enable us to deliver maximum value through controlling costs, proper planning, timely delivery and efficient resource and expertise allocation. This tool enables us to track progress and costs against project budgets and timelines. Further, we embrace technology to automate and reduce repetitive work, while assigning routine tasks to paralegals and junior solicitors.

Communication - Speed and Stracey

Communication

We work closely and transparently with clients to achieve the best possible outcome. When you engage Speed and Stracey you will be kept fully informed of the progress of your matter as it is handled with critical analysis, an eye for detail and clear thinking. Each current matter is discussed weekly by the entire firm to enable other lawyers to give the benefit of their expertise.

The Speed and Stracey Way

To provide the highest level of legal support, our lawyers approach all matters in the Speed and Stracey Way.

  • Working out upfront what you aim to achieve
  • Isolating the key issues at the outset
  • Evaluating the range of options from the start
  • Planning strategy upfront
  • Recommending upfront the best course of action
  • Keeping you engaged throughout a matter
  • Working hands-on in efficient teams of two or three persons on each matter
  • Having the same team see the matter through to the end.

Community Work

At Speed and Stracey we are passionate about creating positive change within our local and wider communities.

The firm has been involved in a range of community work, causes and charities since its foundation in 1976.

In 2009 our co-founder Robin Speed with Malcolm Stewart established the Rule of Law Institute of Australia (RoLIA): a not-for-profit body aiming to uphold the rule of law in Australia through comment on Bills before Parliament, articles and reports, conferences and education programs.

In 2015 they founded Rule of Law Education Centre to teach Australian students about the Magna Carta and the rule of law.

Robin was, until recently the Secretary of the Lowy Institute for International Policy, and a member of the Temora Aviation Museum advisory committee.

Members of the Speed and Stracey team provide financial support to, assist with, sit as directors on, and advise a number of other charities and private foundations, including the Temora Aviation Museum, the Lowy Foundation, the Lowy Medical Research Institute, the Sheargold Family Foundation, the Millhouse Foundation, the Sydney Blood Cancer Institute, the Kanimbla Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Judith Neilson Foundation, White Rabbit Gallery and the Dangrove Trust.

Staff at Speed and Stracey Lawyers also help create positive change within our local and wider communities. Lawyers are encouraged to assist Australia’s Magna Carta Institute in the preparation of legal resources for high school students. We also support Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, Vinnies CEO Sleepout, Fred Hollows Foundation, Oxfam and the Mitochondrial Foundation.

Careers

Join a committed and experienced team at one of Australia’s leading specialist firms.

At Speed and Stracey, our enduring success stems from the calibre of our team. Over the years we have gathered a dedicated group of professional and skilled lawyers who are committed to providing the best results for our clients. We are always on the lookout for the right people to join our team and help us cultivate the range of specialist services we offer.

As a Speed and Stracey lawyer you will be working closely with clients to address a range of complex, challenging and high profile matters. Our clients include some of the most prominent and influential individuals and corporations across the country. You will benefit from working directly with our directors in small and dedicated teams, rather than with junior lawyers
as in other firms. At Speed and Stracey we do not operate a leveraged model with tiers of lawyers. As a consequence, junior lawyers with Speed and Stracey get great hands-on experience with experienced directors from day one. We are passionate, strategic and diligent, and are firm believers in working efficiently; for example, utilising modern software to streamline project management and administration processes. We also offer an excellent work/life balance for our employees.

If you share the same qualities and are interested in a rewarding role working with the best in the industry, we welcome your interest.
